Fenian Historical Society

Fáilte ó chroí – a hearty welcome!

The mission of the Fenian Historical Society (FHS) is to honor the memory of the members of the Fenian Brotherhood and Sisterhood by recognizing their significant role in the struggle to restore the independence of Ireland.

The aim this web site is to provide a means for on-line access to historical records, publications, events, and discussions. This effort is part of a broader program related to the Fenian history. Funding for the web site development comes in part from a 2020 Making of Nations Grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership. This support recognizing the impact of the Fenians on the history of Canada, the USA, the United Kingdom, and Ireland is gratefully acknowledged.

The work plan for this grant to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1870 Fenian attack on Canada originally included an extensive range of traveling exhibits, in-person lectures, reenactments, and cultural heritage events. The first lecture took place on March 9, 2020, just before the pandemic made gatherings impossible.

A new work plan switched gears to focus on virtual meetings and on-line presentations. In May 2021, the FHS launched a series of webinar programs about Fenian history. The slides used are now on our History page.

Membership information for the FHS will also be posted on the web site soon.
